The Votes Have Been Counted…. GOLDMINE Readers’

Top Ten Record Store Winners

Where are the best record stores in America? Goldmine asked this question of its readers last spring. The contest was simple: return the ballot that was inserted in issues of Goldmine with the store name and address, along with some brief comments as to why the particular store was so great The results have been compiled and the Top Ten Stores are profiled in this issue.

We have not designated any one store the best, but have instead designated the Top Ten vote getters (who were all within one or two votes of each other) as our Goldmine Readers’ Top Ten. We received hundreds of ballots and readers penciled in 312 individual stores in 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Canada, Australia, Japan and England. It was a blast reading the comments as to why a voter chose a particular store over others in their area. We are reprinting some of your pithy remarks in this issue.

The Top Ten Stores which appear in this issue in alphabetical order receive the following prizes. Certificate suitable for framing Mention in a Goldmine press release sent to newspapers and music media nation wide Free Goldmine retailer directory listing for one year Three copies of each issue of Goldmine for one year.

Six copies of Goldmine's 1996 Annual In addition we drew 20 ballots from all the voters to come up with a prize for those who took the time to vote. (What if the government did something like that for the next presidential election?!! We’d donate some prizes!) The following Goldmine readers are door prize winners. The store they voted for is also listed (so maybe the owners can give them stuff too!).

RECORD CONNECTION
550 N. Reading Road
Ephrata, PA 17522
Phone: 717-733-1641
Fax: 717-733-1685

The Record Connection is owned by Andy Kamm and employs both Joe Battisti and Glenn Eagle. The shop offers a, wide selection of records and CDs in a clean all organized environment (all of its stock is in alphabetical order by artist). Record Connection prides itself on doing its best to help customers find what they're looking for, including placing special orders for things that aren't in stock whenever possible.

However, we can't imagine that that is often necessary, since the Record Connection stocks a wide selection of oldies, pop rock country and jazz with its specialty being '60s and '70s rock, psychedelic and progressive rock. (Record Connection recently expanded its selection of CDs in these categories into independent labels and import CDs.) The shop also carries new releases. The store regularly has in stock up to 20,000 LPs, 9,000 CDs, 5,000 cassettes, 30,000 vinyl EPs and 45s and about 200 videos. It also carries posters, pins, magazines and- books, music memorabilia and supplies.

Kamm occasionally takes the shop on the road and sets up at the KRC show in Lancaster, and at the annual YSP show at the Valley Forge Convention Center both in Pennsylvania. The 1800-square-toot store is open seven days a week from 10 until 8:00 except for Sundays when it's open from noon until 6. “Record Connection has a very large 45 selection; it's conveniently organized and keeps an available turntable for listening before any purchase. It has a large memorabilia selection, including posters, black lights and more, and a friendly, helpful and knowledgeable owner.” -Brian Jenkins Hanover, P A
